Part-Time Studio Technician
BabyFace Studio – Philadelphia
BabyFace Studio is seeking a part-time Studio Technician to assist with studio operations, kiln firing, glaze maintenance, and general studio upkeep.
This is not an internship or entry-level role. Applicants must have prior experience working in a ceramics studio and be comfortable performing technical studio tasks independently. This position is best suited for a practicing ceramic artist or someone with significant studio experience who understands the workflow and responsibilities of a production or teaching studio.
Responsibilities
Loading and unloading bisque and glaze kilns
Mixing, maintaining, and managing studio glazes
Assisting with kiln maintenance and kiln upkeep- this could include scrapping shelves, washing shelves, etc
Managing and organizing glaze test tiles
Reclaiming and processing clay
General studio cleaning and maintenance
Organizing tools, materials, and studio supplies
Supporting overall studio organization and functionality
Labeling names + dates for greenware pieces from date nights, workshops, etc
Requirements
Minimum BFA in Ceramics (MFA a plus)
Previous experience as a studio technician
Demonstrated experience loading and unloading kilns
Experience mixing and maintaining glazes
Must be comfortable working independently and managing studio tasks without supervision
Must have significant personal studio experience and actively make ceramic work
Ability to comfortably lift at least 50 lbs
Reliable transportation
Familiarity with safe handling of ceramic materials, glaze chemicals, and studio safety protocols
Must be comfortable working in a studio environment with clay dust, glazes, and kiln heat
Tasks change week to week depending on what the studio needs.
Schedule
This is a part-time position requiring multiple days per week.
Estimated 12–15 hours per week, with the possibility of additional hours depending on experience and ability to assist with additional studio responsibilities.
Studio technician hours are typically scheduled in blocks of 3–5 hour shifts (longer shifts may be possible depending on workload and availability- open to flexibility).
Scheduling is flexible, and we are happy to work around your availability.
Availability at least one day on the weekend is preferred, but we are open to applicants who primarily have morning, daytime, or evening availability.
Additional Qualifications (a plus)
Wheel throwing or hand-building experience to help create sample pieces for classes, workshops, and studio demonstrations- not mandatory for the position- but a plus if you would like to help
Compensation
Hourly rate based on experience.
Hourly rate- $20–$25 depending on experience and technical skill.
Opportunities for additional hours and responsibilities may be available for candidates with strong studio and technical experience.
